For its namesake product, Paper No. 9 uses paper to produce a one-of-a-kind leather alternative. Inspired by a 19th-century Japanese wall covering, the fabric begins with recycled paper that is cured with natural oils and emollients. It is then laminated onto a sustainable denim or canvas substrate and treated with an organic wax finish. The proprietary process developed by women-owned Paper No. 9 requires minimal waste and zero toxins, and does not use stripping agents, bleach, or wastewater. Over time, the textile ages in a leather-like way. As seen in Material ConneXion, Paper No. 9 fabrics are handmade in Brooklyn, New York, USA and available in bespoke colors, textures, and effects.
